Story behind the Lens

On Labor Day, September 7, 2026, we arrived at Minnewaska State Park Preserve early to get ahead of the holiday crowds. After parking near Awosting Falls, we were advised by the park attendant that upper lots filled rapidly, so we decided to complete our entire journey on foot. Crossing over the trail culvert, I caught my first glimpse of a Northern Green Frog resting on a stone, but they quickly splashed out of view. On the walk to Awosting Falls, I nicknamed our elusive friend "Fred"—a nod to my daughter’s habit of naming every jumping spider "Jumpy." After hiking to the falls and exploring the loop around Lake Minnewaska, we made our final return past the culvert where Peters Kill flows. There sat Fred on a vibrant, moss-covered rock right at the water's edge, perfectly composed and resting in complete tranquility.

Composition

This macro wildlife study focuses on the subtle texture and quiet focus of a Northern Green Frog (Lithobates tenant/clamitans) in its native habitat. The composition anchors Fred on a rich, moss-draped stone, balanced naturally by the diagonal sweep of a weathered branch and soft natural elements. The top of the frame dips into dark, moody reflections of the water, creating a deep contrast that isolates the vivid emerald greens along Fred’s eye and back. The natural ambient lighting captures the detailed mottled skin, bright golden-ringed eye, and serene presence of the frog as Peters Kill gently flows past.

Fine Art Quality

To capture the intricate textures of the moss, the glint of light on Fred's eye, and the subtle variations of green and bronze skin with gallery-level precision, I personally print each piece using the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100.

  • Artisan Textured (Palo Duro Etching 315): My top recommendation for this portrait. The heavy, watercolor-like texture adds a tangible depth to the mossy stone and smooth contours of the frog, enhancing the organic feel of the outdoor scene.
  • Vibrant Metallic (Polar Luster Metallic 255): Adds a luminous finish to the wet skin and water reflections, capturing the shimmer of sunlit mountain water.
  • Standard Matte (Polar Matte 230): A clean, glare-free archival surface that ensures every fine pattern on Fred’s back remains crisp and reflection-free under any lighting. Starting at $35.00.

Artist’s Note

"Patience is often the most vital lens in wildlife photography. After twice slipping out of sight earlier in the day, Fred rewarded us on our final pass along Peters Kill with complete calm. There's a subtle magic in pausing to observe the smaller inhabitants of our state parks—reminding us that even on a busy holiday, quiet moments are waiting right beside the path if you take the time to look."
