The Story behind the Lens

Rising prominently along the shores of Agfayan Bay in Inalåhan, this distinctive karst formation is widely known today as Bear Rock. Because bears are not native to Guam, the name is a modern addition introduced after the arrival of the Americans, who saw a familiar animal profile carved by time and tide. Historically, local CHamoru tradition knew this landmark by other names—including Åcho' Higånte (Giant Rock) and Laso' Gi'ai. Captured on July 28, 2024, this photograph honors both the modern recognition and the deep, enduring history of Guam’s southern coastline.

The Composition

This photograph layers the rugged coastal terrain of Inalåhan into a striking vertical study of land and sea. In the foreground, weathered, shallow reef rocks break through the calm waters of Agfayan Bay, leading the eye across the tide toward the elevated headland. There, framed against lush greenery and a soft Pacific sky, the iconic rock formation stands tall—a timeless sentinel guarding the southern shore.

"Exploring the southern coast of Guam is a masterclass in how names and stories evolve over time. While most visitors know this formation as Bear Rock, uncovering the older CHamoru names like Åcho' Higånte and Laso' Gi'ai gives you a far deeper appreciation for the land. Framing it from low in the water allowed me to capture the sheer presence of this sentinel as it has stood for generations—a monument sculpted entirely by nature and steeped in the island's history."
