The Story behind the Lens

Reaching the iconic Big Sable Point Lighthouse in Ludington, Michigan, during the winter months is a true test of dedication. On December 23, 2025, my wife, daughter, and I set out on a 4.9-mile loop—navigating woodland trails that had turned into sheets of slick ice before returning through the quiet, rolling coastal dunes. Rising 112 feet above the shores of Lake Michigan, this historical 1867 lighthouse stands as a majestic testament to maritime history, carved against a crisp winter sky.

The Composition

Captured from an elevated vantage point nestled among the dunes, this horizontal landscape showcases the striking contrast of Michigan’s winter shoreline. The black-and-white striped tower and red-roofed keeper's quarters serve as a bold architectural focal point, flanked by bare winter trees and the deep blue expanse of Lake Michigan. In the foreground, golden, wind-swept sand dunes curve through warm light and soft shadows, bridging the gap between land, history, and sea.
