Tabu Tiki | Night Sentinel
The Story behind the Lens
Nestled along the beachfront pathway between the Dusit Thani and Dusit Beach Resort in Tumon Bay lies the popular Tabu Tiki Bar—a beloved spot famed for its live entertainment and oceanfront walk-up service. Standing guard along the resort walk is this carved wooden tiki totem. While a striking sight by day, the sculpture comes alive after dark when dramatic uplighting illuminates its hand-carved features, casting rich shadows against the tropical night sky and glowing resort architecture.
The Composition
This vertical night photograph highlights the play of warm, dramatic light against deep shadows. Ground-level uplighting washes over the carved wooden grain of the totem, emphasizing its expressive, stacked facial features and warm golden tones. Framing the lit carving in the background are tall palm fronds and the subtle, illuminated facade of the Dusit Thani, capturing the relaxed, atmospheric luxury of Tumon Bay after sunset.
Fine Art Quality
To ensure the warm wooden tones, dramatic low-light contrast, and deep night shadows translate perfectly from the lens to your walls, I personally print each piece using the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100. I’ve selected three professional paper stocks to showcase the unique light of this photograph:
- Artisan Textured (Palo Duro Etching 315): Adds a museum-quality, tactile depth to the carved wood grain and surrounding palm fronds, giving the night scene an artistic, painterly feel.
- Vibrant Metallic (Polar Luster Metallic 255): Accentuates the warm, golden glow of the uplighting on the totem, giving the lit carving a distinct three-dimensional pop against the dark backdrop.
- Standard Matte (Polar Matte 230): My top recommendation for this low-light print. A smooth, sophisticated finish that delivers exceptional black-density, keeping the dark night sky glare-free while allowing the warm uplighting on the wooden totem to stand out sharply.
